Gun Hill Road Bridge spans the river’s last remaining “oxbow” formation, a naturally occurring U-shaped bend caused when fast currents erode one bank while slower-moving water deposits sediment on the other. At one time the river had many oxbows, but they were erased as the river was straightened to make way for rail and roadways.
