Located in the Old North End of Burlington, the Sara Holbrook Community Center serves a diverse community, with families struggling to just get by. According to U.S. Census 2000 data, Old North End neighborhoods constitute the highest concentration of poverty in Burlington and the state of Vermont.
The Creating Connections program is a community-based mentoring program with the goal of matching youth in the community with caring and responsible adults. Our program seeks to match school aged youth, grades K-12, with adult mentors to develop positive relationships that can foster healthy lifestyle choices. Creating Connections works in all Burlington communities, with a focus on serving underprivileged and refugee/immigrant populations.
The Teen Program is extensive, with two sites serving youth 6th grade to 12th grade. Drop-in teen programming is held at two sites, the Sara Holbrook Center and the New North End Youth Center (NNEYC). The drop-in centers provides pool tables, foosball, air hockey, computers, movies, and board games and is supervised by supportive staff. Community outings on Friday nights, field trips during the summer, dance parties.
There are also two special focus groups, Ladies Night out and Guys Night Out. Each group creates a time and space to explore self-esteem, healthy relationships, community citizenship, and personal issues.
