The East River facility comprises a large brick building with four smokestacks rising more than 350 feet in the air on the north side of 14th Street and a square block of transistors and large-scale wiring on the south side. Situated on the fringe of the continuously gentrifying but decidedly lowrise East Village, it is surrounded by city housing projects and gut-renovated tenements.[1]
