Founded in 1869 and chartered as an educational institution by the New York State Board of Regents in 1909, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) pursues a mission “to discover, interpret, and disseminate—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe.” AMNH is one of the world’s preeminent scientific cultural institutions, advancing knowledge about the history and diversity of life, human cultures, and the natural world, and interpreting and presenting that knowledge to the public—roughly 5 million visitors onsite in 2011, and many millions more around the world who visit AMNH exhibitions in their home communities and online.
