"bioindicator" "storm surge" oysters"
A bioindicator is a living organism that can provide clues about the health and well being of an ecosystem. Some organisms are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment. Due to water pollution and other factors, New York Harbor, which was once rich in oysters, had a non-existent population. The Billion Oyster Project (BOP) is a collaboration whose goal it is to plant a billion oysters in New York Harbor in the next 20 years. Oysters can have many beneficial effects on an ecosystem. They help filter water and can even reduce the effects of storm surge.
