"fair share" "resilience" "climate change"

Fair share refers to the idea that some people take on a disproportionate amount of risk or burden when it comes to the environmental risks or effects of climate change. In New York City there 6 areas that have been classified as Significant Maritime and Industrial Areas (SMIA’s).  These areas have heavy concentrations of industry and chemical storage facilities. Many of these communities are occupied by some of the city’ lowest income residents.  When there is flooding these neighborhoods are especially vulnerable because toxins can contaminate the floodwaters creating very hazardous conditions.  One such neighborhood is Red Hook in Brooklyn.   Organizations like the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance are urging the city to examine these areas and make changes so that on one experiences undue hardship as a result of climate change.
