This site is the location of a former manufactured gas plant. The plant was located on both sides of First Avenue, between East 110th and East 112th Streets. The site is currently occupied by a Con edison service Center, a portion of Thomas Jefferson Park, a warehouse, and a high-rise apartment building. A site characterization was conducted in 2004 and revealed limited MGP impacts at the site. A remedial Investigation was completed in 2005, with a Remedial Investigation Report finalized in January 2006. A work plan for follow-up investigation has been approved, but field work has been delayed by access issues created by a major DEP sewer project.
Site Environmental Assessment
The 2004 site characterization and the 2006 Remedial Investigation Report identified limited MGP impacts at the site. Some isolated areas of MGP contamination may need to be remediated, and some groundwater contamination will likely need to be monitored. Additional investigation is continuing at this site, but is being delayed by permitting and access difficulties.
Site Health Assessment
Manufactured Gas Plant waste has been identified in surface and subsurface soil and groundwater at the site. The potential for exposure to low level site-related impacted surface soils through direct contact is possible in areas that are not paved or covered by buildings. Exposure to site-related contaminants in groundwater is not likely since homes and businesses near the site are connected to public water.
