Site Environmental Assessment
The site is a retired LILCO
(Long Island Lighting Co.) electrical subsatation with various types of fill material including fill from former gas manufacturing facilities. The site is surrounded by a fence which also contains a concrete pad on a portion of the property. Soil samples indicated leachable lead and leachable benzene, both exceeding the regulatory limit. The entire property was excavated to 4 to 5 feet to the depths of groundwater. All contaminated soils (lead and PCB hazardous) were shipped off-site for proper disposal. Excavated areas were backfilled with virgin sands and top six inches were replaced by stones. Since then, quarterly groundwater sampling was performed and indicated no groundwater contamination. Soil gas sampling was also performed at the property boundary. PRP has petitioned for delisting of this site. Deed restrictions/ environmental easements are being negotiated.
Contaminated soils from the entire property were excavated and disposed off site. Post excavation soil gas sampling and groundwater monitoring indicated no concerns. Property is completely fenced with ristricted access. The Site has been developed into an electric substation.
Site Health Assessment
Contaminated soil was excavated to groundwater, approximately three feet below ground surface, and disposed off-site. Clean sand and a blue stone cover over the site minimize the potential for exposure to residual soil contamination. The area is served by public water, therefore, exposure is not expected.
