This site is currently used as a truck maintenance and repair facility by Mystic and is registered as a Petroleum Bulk Storage facility. The site is located in a commercial/industrial section of Astoria, Queens, New York. The property is located at 19-01 and 19-39 Steinway Street. The Site consists of 2.3 acres of land improved with a two-story office building with a basement and a single-story truck maintenance garage. The office building was constructed in 1890 and the garage was built in 1971. The remainder of the site is paved. The property was previously used for manufacture of costume jewelry. Underground and aboveground fuel storage tanks are also located on the property. The garage building contains several repair bays and a boiler room. A maintenance pit, a pump island for fueling and two 4,000-gallon diesel underground storage tanks are located by the garage. A fuel oil powered generator is located on the roof of the garage. The intended future use of the site is to remain as a truck maintenance and repair facility. Remedial investigations indicate that the site soil and groundwater contain chlorinated solvents and petroleum related compounds. Mystic conducted additional site assessment and has performed a round of groundwater monitoring in December 2006 to further characterize potential source areas and to continue to monitor the volatile organic compounds identified in the site groundwater.
Site Environmental Assessment
Site investigations indicated groundwater contamination by chlorinated solvents and petroleum compounds. Upgradient groundwater is also contaminated with similar constituents.
Site Health Assessment
NYSDOH has insufficient information to evaluate the potential for human exposures.
