The Doan Brook is an 11.7 mi2 watershed system located in the “heights” just east of Cleveland, Ohio. The brook feeds into four separate lakes, constructed by the Shakers in the early 1800’s. By the mid-1900’s, the area around the Doan Brook had begun to urbanize, and today land use is predominantly residential (85%). Only 12 % of the area is undeveloped, and much of this is parkland adjacent to the stream. Today, sewer and storm drainage as well as local fertilizer and pesticide usage have resulted in poor water quality in the brook. The Doan Brook Project seeks to reverse these effects and develop sustainable solutions to preserve the watershed.
